The Church of "Peace"

  • The battle was named after a church named Shiloh
  • The reason the Battle of Shiloh took place at the Shiloh church was because some of Grant's troops were camped there while waiting for more troops, however Johnston's forces surprise attacked them and the battle had begun.
  • The Church of Shiloh ironically translates to "Place of Peace".
  • The "Place of Peace" was said to be completely destroyed after battle, and the logs were used for making a bridge.
  • The church was reconstructed in 1949 and a replica of the old one was built in 2001 and now is a national park.
  • The Church of Shiloh presently appears as:

  • The inside of the log church looks like:

FUN FACTS

  • Its name came from Shiloh Church, located near the Union camps, which was used as a hospital for wounded troops.
  • When the confederate army attacked the Union Camp, General Johnston waved a tin cup, instead of a sword, and led his army with it since that was all he could find.
  • csaflag.jpg This was the flag, known as the "Stars and Bars", for the Confederate army.
  • Shiloh was the 9th deadliest battle in the Civil War.
  • On the battlefield there was a small pond where soldiers would crawl to drink water. During the first night it turned red from all the blood and became known as the Bloody Pond.
  • Drummers that played during the battle were as young as 10 years old and often killed in battle.
  • During the surprise Confederate attack after the Union troops fled, the Confederate troops stopped to eat the rest of their breakfast.
